Coral Harbour got its name from the fossilized coral that is found in the waters of this harbour, coral that once flourished when northern Canada had a warmer climate. Many come to bird-watch at the East Migratory Bird Sanctuary located 70 km (44 mi.) east of the community. The Harry Gibbons Migratory Bird Sanctuary is another nearby location, 140 km (87 mi.) southwest, with snow geese, tundra swans, and Sandhill cranes. The local walrus colonies are also fascinating to see.
