Chesterfield Inlet represents a blend of traditional and new lifestyles, as you will find a nursing station, school and coop in the town, but also drying animals and fish outside the locals' homes. The town also houses a fishing plant that processes arctic char and ships it south. The community was originally a Hudson's Bay Company post, established to trade arctic fox fur, and eventually became the center for medical and educational services in the Kivalliq region.

The Chesterfield Inlet Historical Trail is a self-guided walking tour, which leads you through the early years of the settlement and describes the history of the area. The nearby Thule archeological site contains semi-subterranean houses, kayak stands and food catches from this historical period.
